APPLY FOR A GRANT
The Jerome Lejeune Foundation is the world’s oldest and largest private funder of research into treatments for intellectual disabilities of genetic origin, especially, but not limited to, Down syndrome. The Foundation’s specific research interest is to discover a means of treating genetic intellectual disabilities in order to improve the memory, speech, and cognition of patients.
Researchers who are working in basic or applied science and who have genetic intellectual disabilities (Down syndrome, Fragile X syndrome, Cri-du-Chat syndrome, rare chromosomal anomalies, Rett syndrome, Williams Beuren, Willi Prader, Angelman…) as their therapeutic target are invited to submit proposals for funding assistance from the Foundation.
The Jerome Lejeune Foundation will consider all proposals which have as their goal advancing scientific knowledge which leads to the discovery of treatments to improve the intellectual capacities of those affected by genetic illness. The Foundation provides no funding for research into autism. Therapeutically oriented projects will be given priority and may receive consideration for larger grants. Funding for research congresses and teaching programs may also be considered.
The Jerome Lejeune Foundation is an international grant making foundation. Requests for funding must, therefore, be considered in a common currency, or in this case, the euro. Researchers outside of the “Eurozone” are required to submit requests by converting their budget request into euros. Online currency converters are readily available. Grants made to researchers in the U.S. are paid in U.S. dollars based upon the currency exchange rate on the date of approval of the project.
The maximum grants awarded by the Foundation are usually 20,000 euro for one year or 40,000 euro for two years. Awards may be higher when it is shown that projects anticipate significant breakthroughs of value to the research community worldwide.
Applicants must complete the Foundation’s grant application form and submit it along with all supporting documentation by the deadline stated below. The Jerome Lejeune Foundation’s Scientific Advisory Board will review applications and make recommendations for funding to the board of the Foundation. The Scientific Board reviews applications twice each year.
